Alexander the Great Errata (2.3)

Thanks to everybody that has enjoyed Warhammer Alexander the Great (AtG) so far, I hope that the following errors and omissions are forgiven.

General Rules (Pages 4-10)
Addition: Although omitted in the General rules section it was intended that Falling Back in Good Order be a part of the rules for Alexander the Great. For the latest overall Falling Back in Good Order rules see: http://www.warhammer-historical.com/ancientbattles/errata.asp

Page 5: Oracles effects. Add the following clarification: If a unit or army standard is applied to a hand to hand combat result then no oracles may be used to add to the Combat Result. However, oracles may still be used to re-roll leadership and break tests even if standards are involved.   Oracles may not be applied to skirmisher combat resoltion, but may be used for re-rolls of leadership tests.

Allied Troops: In general the AtG selection lists assume that all "Allied" troops must follow army list rules and restrictions. An Allied Army General is not required for allies, but may be chosen in very large games. Here are some examples:   restricted kirata bowmen could not outnumber spearmen as allies from the Mountain Indian list. The Mauryan Indian army may take Persian Noble Levy cavalry without restrictions since that unit type is singularly listed.

Cavalry Wedge Formation:
Wedge combat, Clarification: In the case of chariots ridden by characters, each character counts separately from the chariot model for purposes of counting how many models may strike back that are not in contact with the apex of the wedge. For example if a wedge of ten models strikes a unit of five Heavy Chariots that contain three characters, then the chariot in contact would fight back with the character and chariot. The other out of contact characters would count as separate models from their chariots, so the player may need to choose which models would attack in this circumstance.

Wedge Flattening, Clarification: If skirmishing troops charge a wedge, the wedge does not flatten out. However the wedge may only fight with models in actual contact if hit on the side or rear.

Army Composition: In most army lists, one model, or one crewman for chariots, in each unit may be upgraded to a Leader (+5 pts), one to a Standard Bearer (+5 pts), and another to a Musician (+5 pts) unless otherwise stated. Note that Elephants and War Machines may not have Leaders, Standard Bearers or Musicians. Greek units and Rise of Macedon units may not have unit standards, this also applies to Rise of Macedon army Allied units.

Army Generals: All armies must have an Army General, unless a special scenario. Replace the 0-1 with 1. In skirmish scenarios any character can be nominated as the Army General.

Macedonian army lists:
Page 25: Epigonoi Phalanx: Ignore the combined formation listing. Agema pezhetairoi are allowed in combination with Epigonoi from the Imperial list, but regular pezhetairoi are not allowed.
Page 25: Phalangites: This should be a category header in boldface, with Hypaspists, Pezhetairoi and Agema underneath.
Page 25: Persian Companions: Should be labeled (EX).
Page 25: Dahae/Skythians: May add pelta (buckler) + 1pt.
Page 25: Experimental Phalanx: Should be labeled (EX).
Clarification: The EX (experimental) label really does not mean anything. It is there to identify troops that Alexander never really used in battle, but possibly planned on using in his further adventures. It is only a guideline to separate the real troops from the what-ifs.
Page 26: Imperial Macedonian Allies: You may use the following as a guideline for your historical allies selections: Late Achaemenid Persian Allies: Persian cavalry and levies are allowed, but no Persian infantry (meaning melophorai, satrapal infantry, or kardakes), and no scythed chariots are allowed. No Persian characters are allowed.
Indian Allies: This should be labeled, Indian and Mountain Indians: 0-1 Indian elephant, Elephant escorts, cavalry, and 0-1 mercenary infantry, may be taken from the Indian list. 0-1 Parapamisidae cavalry and kirata tribesmen may be taken from the Mountain Indian list.
Thracian Allies: No Rolling Wagons are allowed.

Greek mercenaries:
Page 79: Xenagos. Change to: 0-1 xenagos. Equipment: Same as the Polemarch above. Clarification: A xenagos may be taken instead of the Polemarch, and gains the special Polemarch abilities.
Page 80: 0-1 Greek Horse: Remove the 0-1.

Cretan archers may be taken if a Hoplite, Peltast, or a Greek Horse unit is also taken.

Thracian army lists:
Page 82: Clarification: Army Selection: Thracians troop selection restrictions are based on the type of Army General selected. If a Getae King, Warlord (Highland), or Odrysian King (Lowland) Army General is chosen then the army must conform to the restrictions described.
Page 83: Warriors: Equipment: (historical addition) 0-1 unit may replace javelins with slings (free).
Special rules additions: Thracians armed with bow or sling must skirmish. Slingers may not be the largest skirmisher infantry unit in the army.
Thracian Formed Infantry Option:

Lowland Tribes unit armed with spears may be fielded as normal ranked infantry instead of Light Infantry. If this option is chosen the unit may not skirmish. Formed spearmen retain "stealth," and should be identified as being separate from Light Infantry units, either by using a different basing scheme or some other marking method.
Rhomphaia Option:
Duncan Head suggests that the Rhomphaia is slightly miss-represented in AtG based on current information, most notably Christopher Webber's latest research contained in "The Thracians 700Bc - Ad 46" published by Osprey publications. A Thracian warrior may choose to use his Rhomphaia as a sword and retain his shield or wield it like a halberd, and go without the shield save. The unit must choose the option before the combat round begins and all models in the unit must choose the same option.

Skirmisher Option:

Page 83: Thracian Skirmisher Bonus: Apply the following to all Thracian Lowland and Mountain tribesmen: Warriors: Thracian Warrior units add +1 to their leadership if they are skirmishing.

Fall of Persia army list:
Page 92: Characters:
Characters Satrap: One Satrap may be taken for each Persian and/or levies unit in the army to limit of character points (exception: scythed chariots).

Greek Mercenary characters are counted as part of characters points totals, not troops.

Page 92: Massed Cavalry. Addition:
- Massed cavalry may count a combat rank bonus of up to +2, if they charge or countercharge.
- Massed cavalry lose half their movement allowance if they wheel more than 1" when marching or charging. (see also AoW page 5)

Page 93: Clarification: The special rules for Satrapal Guards refer to the 0-1 Persians statline. Each unit type in this group may combine only with similar troops. So melophoroi may only be combined with melophoroi, etc. One may combine kardakes archers with kardakes spearmen, however the whole formation is then treated as Light Infantry.

Typo: Note that melophorai should be spelled melophoroi.

Page 93: Levies: Noble Cavalry, Clarification: Every second cavalry unit may be Noble Cavalry. Any other cavalry units allow a Noble Cavalry selection, not just levies.
Page 94: Bithynian allies: Wagons can not be taken. Bithynian foot all count as Lowland Thracians, no rhomphaia are allowed. Only Light cavalry may be selected, no Nobles, or Getae allowed.
Page 94: Dahae/Skythians: Should be armed with daggers, javelins, and bows. May add pelta (buckler) + 1pt.

Frontier Horsemen army list:
Page 100: Horse Archers: May replace bows with javelins (free) or add javelins +2 pts.

Indian army lists:
Page 108: Army Selection: There is no "Generic Indian Army List." Players must choose from the following variants:
Classical Indians, Republican Indians, Mountain Indians, or Mauryan Indians.
Page 109: Infantry/Mercenaries: May add longbow +3 pts, or may add shields, throwing spears *and* javelins +3 pts.
Page 114: Brahman Priests: Followers of deceased Brahman Priests, check at the start of the Indian player's turn.

Note: For all lists, crew and mahouts riding elephants gain an armor of save 6+ as they count as mounted. Armor and shields are added to this basic save. If a tower is used then the basic mount save is not added.

Text issues:
Page 18: Duncan Head most emphatically lets me know that the AtG text
has propagated a myth relating to blue haired or tatooed Agrianians. My
reference was indeed an old WRG Phil Barker publication that apparently
mistakes the tribe called Agathyrsi as Agrianians, and even the question
of Agathyrsi tattooing is somewhat questionable. So please disregard
this error.

Page 50: The split sarissa is mostly artist's license.

Page 74: Glaucus of Aetolia is listed as the Greek polemarch, but on
page 76, Paron of Phocis is identified. The mistake occurs because they
were both at that battle. The player should choose which one to use as
the polemarch, or may substitute both as xenagoi, only one would still
count as "the polemarch." One character can then be assigned to each
unit of Hoplites.

Page 80: Hoplites blurb: The word "not" should be replaced with *only*.

Page 86: The sentence from the first column to the second does not read
right, and should say: "For the most part, the Illyrian warrior is
depicted as wearing a baldric and an unbelted sleeveless tunic."

Page 93: Scythed chariots refer to "pages 70-71" for further
rules...unfortunately it should be page 95

Page 122: Alexander's assault force OOB. Nicanor should be replaced by
Antigenes as a Taxiarchos. Seleucus was in charge of the Hypaspists this
day and symbolically is the Second in Command. Players may wish to
instead make Coenus the Sub-General if they wish him to carry out a
flank march. In this case Seleucus is reduced to Taxiarchos.

Page 126: In all cases the name Dr. Nick Sekunda is misspelled as
"Secunda", please extend my apologies to Dr. Sekunda as his fine works
are an inspiration to all of us ancient gamers. For some reason I had a
mental block against spelling his name with a 'k' and I replicated that
error into the book. I am truly sorry, and will whip my spell checker
into proper shape!

Map issues:
On the inside front cover the Lower map of Alexander's Eastern Campaigns
has the Persian Gulf labeled as the Red Sea.. The Map maker* has been
severely chastised for not catching this error. (*That would also be the
author).

Questions and Answers:
Page 93: Question: "Do Kardakes only become Light Infantry if all the
unit is armed with, slings, javelins or bows?"
Answer: If any kardakes in a combined unit is armed with slings,
javelins or bows then the whole unit is treated as light infantry.
Kardakes that are armed with only spears and shields are not counted as
Light Infantry and may utilize a full rank bonus.

Page 94: Question: "Satrapal levies are listed with the combined
formation "skill" - Yet you are only allowed bow armed troops for every
second unit. Does the combined formation overrule this?"
Answer: The restriction still applies even if a unit is combined with
bowmen. So you could have a unit of mixed spear and javelins, and then
you could have a unit of mixed spear and bows. I tend to believe that
the mixed formation was somewhat gone by Alexander's era, so I field
units of either spear or bow, not combined, but this is truly
speculation.

Page 94: Question "Who is used to Elephants in the Persian army?"
Answer: Cavalry and chariots from the End of Persia list are never "used
to elephants." To be precise this would apply to any mounted character
on horse or chariot, Kinsmen Cavalry, Persian Cavalry, Scythed Chariots,
Noble, Satrapal, and Colonist Shock Cavalry, and Dahae/Skythian, and
Skirmisher Cavalry. The intent is to present an army list that can take
an elephant that is not fully integrated in the army. In a tournament
where all armies with elephants are deemed "used to them", Persians
still should not be, but that is of course up to the tournament
organizer to decide. Indian allies however would be "used to the
beasts", but other allied troops would not.

Page 115: Question: "If Persian Noble Cavalry are taken as an allied
part of a Mauryan Indian Army must they take a corresponding unit of
other shock horsemen?"
Answer: No. In this case Noble cavalry (representing Saka or Bactrians
in this case) are singularly listed, so the unit validation is waived.
Normally when allied troops are listed as a whole, one would expect unit
validations to be followed. If a game was large enough to include a
Thracian Warlord as an ally, then his Thracian troops must conform to
the restrictions on page 82.

Do Supplement Army Lists supercede the lists in AoA? What is the
'official' word?
Officially there is no settlement to this debate. Jervis Johnson has
been noted as saying that he favors use of all published lists, from
supplements and AoA. This position causes some issues for tournament
organizers and I must say that the best solution there is to leave
things up to their own judgement!

The official word on the AtG supplement (from me that is.. And I'm not
official by any consideration)... Is hopefully people will rather play
these lists than the old ones... The Rise of Macedon and Alexandrian
Imperial lists do not replace anything and are in many ways totally
distinct from the AoA list. AoA will still be needed by players who
wish to build Successor armies... this is at least until a proper
Successor book comes out. The Indian and Persian lists do not intend to
replace the armies in AoA either. As the Persians in my supplement
represent the later Achaemenids armies that fought Alexander, and in no
way represent the Persians in the classical era, thus AoA will still be
needed there. The Indians represent forces that specifically fought
Alexander and the Successors, and I would not venture to pass judgment
whether AtG's ideas are any better than the AoA list. It could be
argued that the AoA Indian list is better suited for Vedic era warfare
than AtG's suggestions. So who am I to say that somebody that builds a
Vedic army based on AoA is wrong!

On the other hand some have claimed that Indians lists AtG has provided
are easier to adapt to Khmer than AoA.
Jeff note: AoA has fallen by the wayside. All Greek references should
refer to the new Greek list in WAB 1.5 and the errata posted here:
